GWEN PIMENTEL APPEALS TO MILITARY

Nacionalista Party senatorial candidate Gwen Pimentel today appealed anew to the Armed Forces of the Philippines to “stay neutral” in the elections even as she warned of “ominous signs of military unrest over possible failure of elections.”

Gwen Pimentel referred to the interview of fugitive Marine Capt. Rafael Faeldon by ABS-CBN in which he warned of a plot to extend the rule of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through a failure in elections.

Gwen Pimentel also cited the warning aired by Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales at the Bishop-Ulama Conference in Davao City last Wednesday that the election was being rigged in favor of two presidential candidates.

“Is Gonzales laying the ground for suspicion of massive cheating in the May 10 elections in order to prepare the mind of our people for a possible failure of elections?” Gwen Pimentel declared.

“Also disturbing is the claim of Gonzales that some officials of the Commission on Elections have already been bribed.  Will there be a repeat of the massive frauds in the 2004 elections when Mrs. Arroyo was elected president, as indicated by the ‘Hello Garci’ tape?” Gwen Pimentel said.

In his clandestine interview with ABS-CBN, Faeldon claimed that a faction of the military was already preparing to join a people power movement in case of a failure of elections to prevent President Arroyo’s rule extension.

Gwen Pimentel said that the only role of the military in elections is to vote, maintain peace and order and to prevent cheating. She appealed to the military not to allow its officers and men to be used as tools to favor any candidate. “Your role is to preserve and protect the Constitution, as you have sworn,” Gwen Pimentel told the military.

She also warned that a failure of elections on May 10 might again mean “the suspension of democracy or its termination for a long while, and the restoration of another dictatorship which would abolish the liberties and freedom of our people.”
